LEARN TO WING FOIL

Posted by Tony James on

Learning to wing foil is much easier than you think.

We have been teaching it since 2018 when we brought the first production wing foils to Darwin. At Fun Supply we focus on providing fun and simplicity, helping beginners trust their natural instincts while learning the basic principles of winging with gear that works in local conditions. We are your local experts when it comes to all things water-sports including Wing Foiling. Contact us today if you want to get into it and have some fun on the water!
There are some common misconceptions surrounding Wing Foiling in Darwin;
  • What a bout the Crocs!!!
Yes we have been asked that question by every Kite, Sup, Windsurf, WingFoil customer since the business began in the 80's. Well, what about them?!!!
They don't bother us and we don't bother them. In all these years we rarely see them and to be honest there are more shark attacks at surf breaks down south than there are croc sightings while doing these sports that we love up here.
Yes be croc wise, be cautious, stay away from creeks and estuaries etc, paddle, kite or wing with others. But there isn't really a need to be hysterical about it... lets leave that to the arm chair sports people that don't use the ocean as much as we do, so don't really know what they are talking about.

  • Learning Difficulty

Winging is much easier to learn than kite surfing, with wing flying skills learnt in 10-15mins on the beach, transferable to the water straight away on a Sup or a Wing specific beginner board.

Hydro-foiling may take you a little longer to master but we have the best beginner gear and instructors making the learning curve that much easier.

  •  Cost

Yes there is a cost, like with most things in life - it aint free!  Used gear can set you back from around $1500 plus. Brand new gear can be $4000 plus. Overall it's comparable and cheaper to other sports like mountain biking, motor cross, boating/camping/fishing etc. Here at Fun Supply we are always looking to help you get in to the sport as easily as possible by trying to keep some used and demo gear in stock and provide cheaper ways for you to get started so come see us first! And if you want to jump straight in to the deep and and buy brand new we can offer avenues to soften the blow of getting your foot in the door.

  •  Location and Wind

Are there suitable locations and do we get enough wind?... "I don't see as many participants as I do when I visit cities down south like brisbane, sydney, perth etc"?

Darwin has less population than the bigger cities and an even smaller watersports community. So it's no doubt you see less action up here. We get mostly light winds apart from a few times in the dry season and a few times in the wet season where stronger winds come to play! And the winds can be localised and often inconsistent! However we do get winds all year round and there is a certain pattern to it.

Dry Season morning SE and Easterly winds changing to Northerly Seabreeze's in the afternoon if the land heats up enough.

Wet Season Westerly and North Westerly winds often with storms/cyclones or our favourite monsoonal troughs that kick up anywhere from 1 day to two weeks of constant fun and games!

Some times you will get a short 15min session before the wind drops out and other days you'll get a morning easterly and an afternoon northerly  in the same day! One of our most loyal and most experienced kite customers tracks his sessions and has been able to get out on the ocean with enough wind at least 200+ times a year.
